SAPS would like to warn residents as we go into winter to check their sensors and alarms – the City Bowl experiences increases in criminal activity as rain and gale force winds provide cover to opportunists. Inclement weather that triggers false alarms may take Armed Response and Law Enforcement’s attention away from attending active crime incidents.
Vredehoek remains the second-highest suburb impacted by “Theft Out Of Motor Vehicle” incidents in May, with incidents commonly occurring on Fridays, Wednesdays, and Tuesdays. Incidents were shown to have most commonly occurred from 21h00 to 00h00. Residents must ensure that their vehicles are locked and that they do not leave any belongings in their vehicles. Several incidents occurred recently where criminals had taken laptops and other valuables despite the owner leaving their vehicle momentarily.
The number of property-related crimes increased in May. Vredehoek experienced the most incidents last month, as criminals operate undetected during the night by forcing open windows and garage doors. Many bicycles and mountain bikes have been reported stolen.
While crime has increased, so have arrests: Cape Town Central Station is reportedly the #1 police station in Cape Town for arrests of the possession of house break-in implements, dangerous weapons, and drug possession.
