Attempted Theft of Motor Vehicle

Gardenia: 20h20 - Whilst out on patrol, a neighbourhood watch member observed a man walking down Gardenia Ave. He walked passed a parked Nissan and then walked back to the vehicle. He entered the vehicle and tried to steal it. He used a sharp object to jam into the ignition and the patroller could see the vehicle’s lights flash on and off. The suspect realised he was being watched and left the vehicle. He was seen on his cellphone, possibly calling a friend waiting to pick him up. A call was immediately put out on the radio and the suspect was seen fleeing onto a neighbouring property. He was surrounded and arrested by SAPS and approximately 10 neighbourhood watch members who had responded to the radio call. The suspect is a large black male with a shaven head, wearing all black with a thin white stripe down the trousers, and black shoes with white soles. A dark blue Toyota Tazz Taxi was seen driving slowly around the area at the time the suspect was on his cellphone. It is believed that this could have been the waiting getaway vehicle.
